Black Friday successes

OK, I caved and bought the raincoat. Once he laid big pleading eyes on it, I didn't have much choice, really. But isn't it adorable? )

Also managed, after a full day of looking and a couple heartbreaks, to find an outfit that will work for Jason's work holiday party, though not for my sister's wedding (green blouse, black skirt - her wedding colors are red, purple and yellow - but I may have a lead on a couple of purple dresses, so that's fine). Was regretful about the first dress I bought, but returned it because Jason saw the same flaw in it that I had initially seen and then had been persuaded to ignore by the saleslady (namely, a large bulky sash right at one of the points in my figure where I do not want added bulk and attention-grabbing sashes) - it was a lovely color (gold-highlighted autumnal brown), it just didn't work as well as the saleslady seemed to think it did. (She was pushing it over a higher-priced dress that I rather liked, too, so it wasn't just the money. I think.)

And found shoes that will look reasonably formal while still feeling reasonably comfortable. I love EasySpirit.

So all in all, I have successfully managed to avoid wearing the same outfit to Jason's work holiday parties three years in a row. Go me!

Just got a publishing nibble on my steampunk western novel, "Spring Cleaning". You know, the one I'm working through another draft of, since I tend to blitz through writing the book and then go back and put more flesh on dem dere bones. You know, the one I was working on before I go for the sequel to WGACK and probably BoG?

A friendly email, a sample, and a response.

Well, more than a nibble.

As in, how fast can I get it finished and in for final consideration. Like, early 2010?

*thud*

2010 is going to be one busy year.

Young Adult book about talking dolls

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 7:32 PM
I remember reading this book back in 6th or 7th grade. Problem is I never finished it and it's bothered me ever since. Haha

I don't remember a lot because it's been a good 10 years, but what I do remember is it's about a young girl who goes to give with her aunts in a house that (I think) use to be a boarding school or something. She learns that the original owners of the building, along with their dog, had died in a fire some time ago. And while she was wandering around the place one day she stumbled into (what I think is) the attic and she finds these dolls. But these dolls weren't just any ordinary dolls. These dolls hold the spirits of the old owners.

A lot of things I remember are pretty vague, but there are some scenes that stick out. Like, the dolls follows the same routine everyday; The woman waters the wallpaper which had pictures of flowers all over it, the man would sit and read the same newspaper and mention that bathtubs were on sale, and the dogs (who became a little porcine dog) curls up in a little dog bed.

There is also this one part that has nothing to do with anything, but I remember her aunts were sealing a bunch of envelopes and using a sponge because licking them would be too unsanitary.

Does anyone have any clue what this book is? I would love to find it again.

The time is 11:36, with 11:37 about to roll in. It makes a hell of a noise when 1 o'clcok rolls around.

Well hot damn.

Here are today’s stats for the fabulous urban fantasy adventure about a neurotic vampire/thief and her wealthy blind client, now with Bonus! Cuban drag queen and military intrigue:

Project: Bloodshot
New Words Written: 4985 (Some added last night; only about 4000 today)
Present Total Word Count: 94,570 words
Goal: Draft Zero by December 12 -ACCOMPLISHED

Things Accomplished in Fiction: Wrapped it up, baby. Wrapped up all of it. This, ladies and gents and all others, is a Draft Zero.

Things Accomplished in Real Life: Virtually nothing. This has been eating my brain and I had to get it out, out, out. And now - best of all - I have almost 2 whole weeks to batter this puppy into a Draft One before sending it back to Anne! [:: does a little dance ::]

Reason for Stopping: BECAUSE I CAN.

Scene: mecha is playing Batman: Arkham Asylum. I am half-watching, half-seaming-up-a-hat.

My coworker just emailed me a Powerpoint show with some cute/funny/unusual animal photos... and this one was easily the best one ever... considering that I am a rat-lover.

Close-up )

Even though this is most likely a wild rat... I still think it is super adorable in this situation. I just hope it isn't a pet rat staged like this for laughs.

50's or early 60's young adult sci fi book

  • Nov. 28th, 2009 at 12:00 PM
I will be amazed if I can find this book. I read it in 5th or 6th grade (~45 years ago). It was a science fiction story with space ships and aliens, and a classic good guy vs. bad guy struggle, and one of the elements of that struggle was mind power or telepathy. The unique element of this story that I (vaguely) recall is that there was some type of rating scale for mental powers, so that if your mental prowess was (for instance) a level 7 you would have an advantage going up against someone with a level of 5.

Not much to go on. The other thing I remember is that I really liked the book! :>)
